Betway Premiership: Sundowns Soar in 2024-25 Season Opener, SuperSport Stumble

In a commanding display, Mamelodi Sundowns kicked off their Betway Premiership title defense with a convincing 2-0 win over city rivals SuperSport United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday night.

Sundowns Set the Pace

The Brazilians established control early in the match, dictating play from the outset. Despite some missed chances in the first half, their attacking capabilities were evident. Coach Manqoba Mngqithi made a pivotal decision by introducing Themba Zwane at halftime, a substitution that sparked Sundowns’ offensive surge.

Zwane Ignites the Attack

Zwane wasted no time impacting the game. In the 62nd minute, he crafted a brilliant pass for Iqraam Rayners, who finished with precision. Just three minutes later, Ribeiro capitalized on a defensive mistake, doubling Sundowns’ lead and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

SuperSport’s Late Push

Although down by two goals, SuperSport United fought back valiantly in the final minutes. Gape Moralo, Pogiso Sanoka, and Thabang Mahlangu all came close to scoring, but Sundowns’ goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was in exceptional form, making several crucial saves to keep the clean sheet.

Looking Ahead in the Betway Premiership

This win sends a strong message to the rest of the league—Sundowns are eager for another title. They now sit at the top of the table on goal difference and aim to maintain their momentum in their upcoming CAF Champions League match against Eswatini’s Mbabane Swallows on Saturday.

For SuperSport United, this marks a disappointing start to their season, but they have a chance to bounce back as they prepare to host Royal AM on the same day. Coach Gavin Hunt will be seeking a significant improvement from his side in their next match.
